Prewritten adventures don't assume any PC ties, they simply present a scenario and sequence of things/various options needed to resolve the scenario. The villains can still have done the same actions, but it needs to be separated from the characters themselves, unless the players explicitly choose to be involved in it. You'd have to remove all of that, or at the minimum adapt it to whatever concept a player character goes with. While you could definitely do this with the game on the show, you'd have to reduce everything to its most basic components.įor instance, the Briarwood arc is directly tied to Percy's backstory. They are by nature railroady, to a certain degree. The difference here is that those adventures are written as basically just a setting and motivation to the next setting.

The wiki and critical role stats are excellent resources. The original Taldorei book had plenty of these things to help and the new one coming next week will just have tons more. That being said, the information is all out there to do it (NPC stat blocks, world specific history, items and spells) so if it's what you really wanted to do, don't let yourself be held back on it. There's nothing inherently wrong with running Critical Role's campaign in the same way other than that there is NOT a dedicated book to filter that into everything you need as a DM. Just because the story is prewritten doesn't mean plenty along the way doesn't get interpreted or played out differently. They most importantly give NPCs, items, maps, etc. These books lay out a campaign and the key story beats that a DM will have the players hit. I think a lot of people are missing the concept of prewritten adventure path books (think Storm King's Thunder or Curse of Strahd.

It would be a lot easier and rewarding for you to create a different campaign in the setting of Tal’Dorei with your players’ own characters and backstories. Sorry to be a bit negative, but I really think you’re doing yourself a disservice by trying to do the same campaign. In addition, Matt has been DMing for like 20 years, that experience really shows, and it’s really hard to do what he does.

There is no way your table can create the same moments you’ve seen onscreen. The people playing this campaign are professionnal actors. Can’t really get into that one without spoilers. Some of the arcs in the campaign happened purely out of the randomness of the dice. Some of the arcs of the campaign are based on character backstories, therefore you’d need to saddle someone in your group with a character they haven’t created. However, I would definitely reccomend to not have a campaign that tries to emulate the plot of CR. I understand your enthusiam towards the campaign, it was magical for me too when I first watched it.
